What is Business Analysis?

Business analysis is the process of identifying business needs and determining solutions to business problems. Who is a Business Analyst (BA) and role of a BA on the project team?

A Business Analyst (BA) is a professional who acts as a liaison between the business group (end users) of a software application and the technical group (MIS or IT teams) that design, develop and test the application.

  • BA work with business users, project sponsors, and other stakeholders to identify, organize, and prioritize requirements that serves as the foundation for an application development.
  • BA’s help define, analyze, and prioritize the business problems facing our clients.
  • BA will identify issues, gather data, interview key client members, analyze information and document the findings and provide solution options/recommendations.

What are the key areas or responsibilities of a Business Analyst?

Some key areas BA’s are responsible for but are not limited to are:

  • Business requirements elicitation, analysis, communication and validation on IT related projects.

  • Working with management to understand their goals and help with how best to accomplish them.

Is Business Analyst role a technical role or functional role?

Business analyst (BA) plays more functional role like understanding business needs, drafting documents, coordinate team communication, provide insights to MIS team on business requirements etc…. However, BA are expected to perform or will be part of performing certain responsibilities where technical skills will help to handle tasks efficiently. Examples of such tasks are testing, interacting with databases, data analysis etc….

Is Business Analyst responsible for programming of the application or involved in any programming?

No, Business Analyst (BA) will not write or involved in coding efforts. The deliverables of a BA are technical independent.


Is technical/programming skills to become a Business Analyst?

While helpful, technical, programming or prior software development knowledge or experience is not a pre-requisite to become a business analyst. Since a Business Analyst is required to interact with developers, some conceptual knowledge of technology and IT/software development principles is helpful, and our workshop covers those fundamentals
